Engaging High School Students in Math Modeling
PlusUs collaborated with the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) to develop an open source math modeling toolkit that serves two functions: 1) it provided teachers and students an introduction to the process of math modeling, and 2) it primed students for participation in the annual Moody’s Mega Math Challenge, a mathematical modeling contest for high school students sponsored by The Moody’s Foundation and organized by SIAM. Working alongside the guidebook’s authors, PlusUs created a set of companion method cards, aligned the process to Common Core standards, and designed the materials in a way that proved clear and engaging for teachers and students.
In addition, PlusUs redesigned the online experience for the Challenge, which included brand building, content mapping and re-organization, writing, UI/UX design, web design, and highly customized web development. The website allows teams to register, receive their challenge prompt, and submit their responses within a pre-defined amount of time. We re-designed the registration and problem submission process to create a simplified and more engaging Challenge experience for student teams.
